Angela Lugo was born in Rochester, NY. Angela Valentina Lugo, also known as D.O.A., grew up around many influential musical leaders, one of which being her mother, Antonia Lugo, who has been a singer from a very young age. Related to Pat Upton of The Spirial Staircase. Growing up, Angela was surrounded by much musical inspiration such as the likes of Marvin Gaye, Billy Holiday, Mama Cass, Earth Wind and Fire, and The Temptations, among others. Angelas mother was very careful as to what type of music Angela was allowed to listen to. With satisfactory results.
Angela was born on June 16, 1988. From childhood, everyone had called her "Unique", for being quiet and humble, always keeping to herself. She had so many words she felt no one had heard, so she would write them down through poetry. The youngest of three girls - her sisters, Alexis and Emmaly Lugo, were more interested in the modeling and professional dancing industries. Angelas father was not a big part of her life. Few months before her birth, her mother and father had separated; Antonia went off to lead a life of raising her daughters all on her own.
Angelas small family experienced hard times. No matter where they moved: New York City, Boston, all the way to Florida, Angela was distressed. "I remember crying all the time. My only real problem growing up was that I felt like I never fit in. Because I was 'grown up' at a very young age, I didnt have many friends." As time progressed, the lack of having a father figure tormented her. "I felt owed," she said. "...I dont know, I just didnt feel normal."
The loneliness began to wear on her, she then retreated to writing love songs and poetry."I had so many books, or better said, 'diaries'. In them I would reassure myself I was going to pull through." She had also considered joining the military.
Discipline - amongst other things, was an escape from the reality of her life. She was so sure to be great at it... eager to leave her tough times behind. "The reason I wanted to get into the military was because I figured it wouldn't be hard to rebuild something that had already been broken down."
In Hollywood, Florida - at age fifteen - Angela had immersed herself into singing and rapping - by beginning to seriously rite lyrics, hanging with a newer, more mature crowd, and taking past experiences spoken down to her through her father figures she looked up to in the streets. With the support of her colleagues and constant motivation through her Idol Tupac Shakurs inspirational words, everyone soon began to realize that "Unique" Angela was setting herself up for a route less traveled to success. With her incentive, dedication, and determinationthey knew she musically gifted. With her debut premiere on Warchilds Me the album, featured on the single Here We Go D.O.A. displays her lyrical style and content on how other female artist better Tighten up.
